Nanjing, Jiangsu Province — Hongshan Zoo in Nanjing, the capital of eastern China's Jiangsu Province, is reshaping the traditional concept of zoos by actively implementing innovative approaches that combine scientific research, wildlife conservation, and cultural development. According to the zoo's director, Shen Zhijun, the goal is to create a space that integrates nature preservation, scientific activities, educational initiatives, and both cultural and environmentally responsible practices.

The zoo regularly hosts cultural events, creative exhibitions, and branded shows aimed at raising public awareness about animal protection and environmental issues. One of its flagship projects is the “Nature School,” which offers educational programs, including nighttime tours that allow participants to observe animals’ natural behaviors in environments closely resembling the wild.

In addition, the zoo features a wide range of original souvenirs designed around themes of conservation and sustainable consumption. This approach not only enhances visitors’ engagement with nature but also helps cultivate ecological awareness among a broader audience.

The zoo’s leadership emphasizes that integrating science and culture into zoological practice not only develops the zoo as a leisure destination but also establishes it as an important platform for education and fostering responsible attitudes toward animals and the environment. These innovations contribute to a rich and diverse experience for visitors of all ages and social backgrounds.

As a result, Hongshan Zoo is emerging as a leading example of a modern approach to zoological park management—one that combines scientific research, wildlife protection, and cultural initiatives—thereby promoting sustainable development and increasing public interest in environmental conservation.
