Turkmenistan Elected to UN Economic and Social Council
Turkmenistan was elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the 2026–2028 term during the 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the U.N. General Assembly on June 4. The announcement was made by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Turkmenistan previously served on the council in 2013–2015 and 2019–2021.
The Economic and Social Council promotes economic and social progress, improved living standards, full employment, and addresses global challenges in areas such as economics, social development and public health. It also fosters international cooperation in culture and education, and works to promote and protect human rights.
The council consists of 54 member states elected by the General Assembly to serve staggered three-year terms. Each year, 18 new members are elected from regional groups to replace those whose terms have ended.
Established in 1946 under the U.N. Charter, the council is the principal body for coordinating the economic and social work of the United Nations and its specialized agencies. It plays a central role in advancing the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.
