Japanese researchers have achieved an unprecedented data transmission speed, setting a new world record in optical fiber communication: 1.02 petabits per second over a distance of 1808 kilometers. This breakthrough was accomplished using standard-sized optical fiber (0.125 mm), similar to that employed in contemporary networks.

For this experiment, the team developed a specialized amplification system and transmitted the signal across 19 fiber cores. A significant metric achieved was the "speed × distance" product of 1.86 exabit-seconds per kilometer, which also constitutes a new world record.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first instance of combining such high speed with data transmission over a distance approaching the scale of real-world telecommunication networks. The scientists emphasize that such innovations are critically necessary for processing the exponentially increasing volume of traffic in a "post-5G society”.
