Western Digital, renowned for its SanDisk brand, has unveiled the high-performance WD_BLACK SN8100 NVMe solid-state drive, leveraging the advanced PCIe Gen 5.0 interface. This SSD is specifically engineered for demanding users, including gamers, content creators, and professionals working with artificial intelligence-based applications, who require uncompromising speed and system responsiveness.

The new drive is capable of demonstrating an impressive sequential read speed of up to 14,900 MB/s and will be available in various capacity options, reaching up to 8 TB. A key advantage of the WD_BLACK SN8100 is its energy efficiency: according to the manufacturer's claims, it is 100% more energy-efficient compared to high-performance SanDisk PCIe Gen 4.0-based SSDs. This significant improvement is achieved through optimized power consumption (not exceeding 7W on average) and the utilization of advanced SanDisk BiCS8 TLC 3D CBA NAND technology.

In addition to its high read speed, the drive exhibits excellent sequential write performance (up to 14,000 MB/s) and random-access performance (over 2,300,000 IOPS for 2–4 TB capacity models). This is double the read speed of comparable solutions utilizing the PCIe Gen 4.0 interface. Notably, the drive also boasts high endurance, making it a reliable choice for executing resource-intensive tasks such as high-resolution video editing and processing large datasets. For users requiring additional cooling, SanDisk offers a version of the WD_BLACK SN8100 NVMe with an integrated passive anodized aluminum heatsink, featuring customizable RGB lighting for aesthetic system enhancement. At the time of announcement, 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacity models are available, priced from $180 to $550 respectively, with the 8 TB version expected to be released within the year. Models with the heatsink will be offered at a $20 premium.
