Cafe Shirin: Asian Dastarkhan in New Jersey


In the busy shopping area of the American town of Manalapan, New Jersey, one can find a modest corner of Central Asia - cafe Shirin acquaints the residents and guests with culinary delicacies and traditions of oriental hospitality.
The elegant painted teapots and bowls fill the window at the counter, and the walls are decorated with oriental carpets and pictures of Central Asian urban landscapes.
The restaurant was opened in 2007 by a couple from Uzbekistan Albert and Marina Sevumyants.
The menu, in Russian and English, is full of dishes that are found in all cuisines of Central Asia - an abundance of meat meal prepared with lamb and veal: snacks from beef tongue, traditional pilaf, pumpkin samsa, chebureks, gutaps, various shashlik, kebabs, manti, lagman, shurpa and much more. The golden flatbread is served as a starter.
At the end of the meal, the visitors are offered to taste oriental sweets - it is tender and light baklava, dried apricots, nuts, fresh fruits. The dessert affluence is accompanied by the tea ceremony.
