Chinese technology giant Huawei announced last Thursday that it will unveil its first line of personal computers (PCs) based on its HarmonyOS operating system on May 19th. This upcoming release marks a significant expansion of the HarmonyOS ecosystem, which already supports smartphones and tablets. By launching computers equipped with the nation's first domestically developed operating system for the general public, Huawei is poised to challenge the long-standing dominance of Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS in the personal computer market, according to a Xinhua report.

Huawei's HarmonyOS-based computers support connection to over 1,000 external devices and currently feature more than 150 dedicated PC applications and over 300 applications compatible with the ecosystem. As stated by Huawei, the new computers will provide a seamless cross-device experience across Huawei-branded devices, allowing users to manage and navigate between the screens of their phones, tablets, and computers using a keyboard and mouse. Furthermore, the HarmonyOS operating system incorporates robust security features, including a dedicated security chip for encryption, secure access mechanisms, and encrypted data sharing.

First launched in August 2019, HarmonyOS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, is an open-source operating system designed for various devices and scenarios, encompassing smart screens, tablets, wearables, and vehicles. According to industry insiders, Huawei will need to exert further effort to attract users during the initial marketing phase, as the established Windows and macOS operating systems offer a more mature and extensive application ecosystem in the existing market.
