UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres sent a video message to the participants in the International Conference “Policy of neutrality and its importance in ensuring international peace, security and sustainable development”. The forum, convened by Ashgabat, took place in the Turkmen capital on Saturday, December 12. 25 years ago the UN General Assembly recognized the permanent neutrality status of Turkmenistan and expressed the hope that it will contribute to strengthening peace and security in Central Asia. Since then, Turkmenistan has been playing an active and positive role in development of peaceful, friendly and mutually beneficial relations between the states of the region and beyond, Guterres said, and expressed gratitude for supporting the activities of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia located in Ashgabat. - In these difficult times, the contribution of each country to international peace is extremely important. As the COVID-19 pandemic gains momentum, I, as UN Secretary General, continue to call for a global ceasefire, and I am grateful to everyone, including Turkmenistan, for supporting this appeal, Guterres went on. He also once again called on all Member States to work towards inclusive sustainable development. The United Nations will continue to provide steadfast support to Turkmenistan in its efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the Secretary General stated, congratulating all on the important anniversary of neutrality.
