Ashgabat is preparing to hold the summit of the Heads of the Founding States of IFAS


Turkmenistan, which currently holds the presidency of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) for 2017-2019, is preparing to hold the summit of the Heads of the Founding States of IFAS, which is scheduled for the third decade of this August. This issue was highlighted at a recent session of the Turkmen government. Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, along with other authorities of the country, is working on the draft agenda of the upcoming summit, as well as the draft documents to be adopted on its outcomes. The last time the meeting of the heads of the founding states of the Fund took place 9 years ago in Almaty. Since then, a number of topical issues have emerged that can be resolved at the summit of the presidents. In particular, Ashgabat proposed a number of important initiatives, including the draw up a Special UN Aral Sea Program and a UN Water Strategy. Experts believe that the implementation of Turkmen initiatives will allow to improve qualitatively the socio-economic and environmental situation in the Aral Sea area.
