Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament Tatyana Valova held a video meeting on the development of cooperation in the context of new realities and challenges. The interlocutors discussed the formats for combining efforts in the field of universal security and stability, protection of human rights, environmental and energy security. Within its neutral status, Turkmenistan promotes international efforts to advance disarmament negotiations. Being a party to the fundamental international treaties and conventions of the United Nations, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), Turkmenistan supports the promotion of the Treaty on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia. It was noted that an International Conference on Disarmament in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea basin was held in Ashgabat in June 2010 at the initiative of Turkmenistan with the support of the UN. In this context, Turkmen side proposed to create a permanent platform for political dialogue on disarmament issues in the region. One of the most serious threats of our time is the coronavirus pandemic, which was given special attention to, namely, overcoming the socio-economic consequences of this global crisis. According to the Minister, Turkmenistan supports the international community’s fight against COVID-19 and in this regard cooperates with the World Health Organization, which also has its headquarters in Geneva. Within the framework of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, the country also offers to consider the development and establishment of relevant international instruments in the field of health.
