88th meeting of ICWC in Dushanbe: what was discussed and what decisions were made
The use of limits and operating modes of reservoirs for the inter-vegetation period of 2024-2025 in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins was considered at the 88th meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Management Commission (ICWC), held on January 29, 2025, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Turkmenistan was represented at the meeting by the Chairman of the State Committee for Water Management, Durdy Genjiev, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Tajikistan, Aymurat Gochmyradov, the Head of the Water Use Department of the State Committee for Water Management, Yanov Pashyev, and the Head of the Department of Digital Technologies and Information Security of the Water Use Department of the same committee, Saparmurat Charyev.
According to the agenda of the meeting, the progress of the work carried out to implement the tasks arising from the summits of the heads of the founding states of the IFAS was considered. The participants noted the work of the members and executive bodies of the ICWC on the implementation of proposals and initiatives voiced at the meetings of the Heads of the Founding States of the IFAS in Turkmenbashy (2018) and Dushanbe (2023). It was decided that the members and executive bodies of the ICWC should submit updated information on the implementation of the tasks arising from the IFAS summits at subsequent meetings. Decisions on this issue also include the assistance of ICWC members in organizing a regional forum within the framework of the International High-Level Conference on Glacier Preservation in May-June 2025 in Dushanbe, instructions to the ICWC Research Institute and requests from the IFAS to attract the necessary funding, if possible.
As noted in the minutes of the ICWC meeting, a decision was made to facilitate the sending of official responses by February 15, 2025, to the request of the IFAS Executive Committee regarding the proposed version of the organizational structure of the improved IFAS and the new name - "Organization for Cooperation of the Aral Sea Basin Countries". The next 89th meeting of the ICWC will be held in the city of Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, in the second decade of April 2025.
