In partnership with the Government of Turkmenistan, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) convened a senior-level roundtable to strengthen local self-governance (LSG).

The event brought together key representatives from the Mejlis (Turkmen parliament), LSG bodies, regional and district municipalities, and ministries to explore global LSG best practices and discuss challenges related to LSG and strategies for improving public service delivery in Turkmenistan.

National and international governance experts shared insights on effective LSG structures, analyzed recent gap analysis findings, and outlined strategies for implementing international legal standards tailored to the Turkmen context.

Building on these discussions, USAID and the Government of Turkmenistan will jointly develop a comprehensive four-year action plan. This plan will include capacity-building initiatives for LSG bodies, legislative reform recommendations, and local planning and budgeting strategies.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward a more participatory governance framework and highlights the commitment of both the Government of Turkmenistan and USAID to strengthening local governance in the country.

USAID’s Governance Activity in Turkmenistan (GAT), in partnership with the Government of Turkmenistan, supports the nation's governance, legislative and socio-economic progress. By promoting transparent, inclusive governance, and advancing evidence-based lawmaking, GAT paves the way for sustainable economic and social development.
