Interactive map of monuments in Turkmenistan helps travelers to choose a route
The specialists of the Geological Information System together with historians developed the electronic tourist map with the positon coordinates of famous medieval monuments in Turkmenistan. Within two years, the experts have gathered information on 115 famous monuments that are of particular interest for curious travelers. During the expedition, the specialists clarified the geographical values and object parameters as well as made photos. The search list included the monuments of Ancient Merv (Mary Velayat), Mashat-Missirian (Balkan Velayat), Kunya-Urgench, the Shasenem-gala fortress (Dashoguz Velayat) among others. Underexplored objects, including a fragment of a fortress wall dated back to 12-13 centuries (Ruhubelent Etrap, Dashoguz Velayat), which are not registered in reference books, have been discovered during the works. The multilayered electronic tourist map shows the borders of the regions of Turkmenistan, main highways, settlements and the Great Silk Road routes. It allows zooming and multiply zooming, searching by names, getting navigational parameters and photo images. A number of travel agencies expressed their interest in the map. Cartographers and historians continue their joint work. At present, they are working on the navigation tourist map of ancient monuments. The specialists of the Centre of Technologies and the Institute of History are planning to create a full-scale map chart of the Mary Velayat with a number of archeological monuments of various historical periods.
