Path of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to green energy lays via fuel resources
The transition of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to alternative energy lays through the use of fossil fuels. This point of view was expressed today by the regional adviser of the sustainable energy division of the UN Economic Commission for Europe Viktor Badaker at the Sub-regional workshop on “National Sustainable Energy Action Plans & Scenarios for Central Asia” held in Bishkek from 12 to 14 June. -Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and, in some ways, Kyrgyzstan should continue to use fossil fuels in order to gradually move to renewable energy sources. This is the only way these countries will be able to switch to green technologies. Another issue is that we need cleaner technologies, the Kyrgyz media quoted the UNECE representative as saying. According to him, a joint project of UNECE and UNESCAP on the preparation of national action plans for the development of sustainable energy is currently being implemented. At the same time, the focus will be on sustainable development goal No. 7, which provides for Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, including through the use of traditional fuels. It’s worth to note one obvious fact - in the future, fossil fuels, i.e. oil, gas, coal - will continue to dominate the energy balances of Central Asian countries, while some, for example, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan will rely on hydropower. In addition to the fact that Central Asia is associated in energy terms with Turkmenistan, which ranks 4th in gas resources, and Kazakhstan with its abundant oil reserves, the region is endowed with huge opportunities in renewable energy - first of all, solar and wind energy. Consequently, the term "sustainable energy" in Central Asia implies the formation of a diversified energy system. More than 50 representatives from all five countries of Central Asia, including government officials, representatives of the private sector, academia and relevant agencies working in the energy sector, participate in the Central Asia first sub-regional workshop. The seminar, which is of a consultative nature, is one of the activities of the project "Pathways to sustainable energy", which targets all of UNECE’s 56 member States across North America, Europe and Central Asia. In particular, the discussions of the seminar will cover such topics as political approaches to achieving sustainable energy in the Central Asian region, modeling of sustainable energy scenarios, regional cooperation, technological portfolio, etc.
