OSCE and UN positively assess the democratic processes in Turkmenistan
A scientific and practical conference devoted to the development of statehood, legal system and democracy in Turkmenistan was held today in the Palace of Justice in Ashgabat.
A number of high-ranking officials took part in the event, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, the Head of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat Natalia Drozd, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Vitali Vremish, the Director of the Institute of State and Law under the President of Turkmenistan Yagmyr Nuryev.
The participants discussed various aspects of the improvement of law in our country, with a special emphasis on the development of democratic institutions and a new edition of the Constitution of Turkmenistan.
“The new version of the Basic Law of Turkmenistan guarantees equality of rights and freedoms, protection of human rights and corresponds to the basic principles of the United Nations,” Vitali Vremish stated.
The UN representative also noted that many laws and regulations adopted in Turkmenistan in a short period of time ensure the rapid development of democratic institutions in the country.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov positively assessed the work of the State and Law Institute under the President of Turkmenistan as a scientific and applied institution, which not only prepares recommendations on the draft laws, but also independently develops certain legislative acts.
“Turkmenistan's initiatives that cover a lot of issues show the country's commitment to human rights, democratic governance and the rule of law,” said Natalia Drozd.
Noting the positive interaction between Turkmenistan and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Head of Mission in Ashgabat outlined a number of concrete opportunities to develop this cooperation, primarily through the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
