The Iraqi Cabinet of Ministers has approved the recommendation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country to develop diplomatic relations with Turkmenistan at the level of a permanent ambassador.

This decision was made at the regular meeting of the Iraqi Cabinet, which took place on Tuesday, November 12, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani. This was reported by Iraqi media with reference to the press service of the Prime Minister of the Republic.

Turkmenistan and the Republic of Iraq officially established diplomatic relations based on a joint communiqué signed by the parties on July 31, 2009. In 2019, Turkmenistan appointed Serdarmammet Garajayev (with residence in Abu Dhabi) as its ambassador to Baghdad. Iraq's interests in Turkmenistan were represented by an ambassador with residence in Astana, where the diplomatic mission is currently headed by Chargé d'Affaires of the Republic of Iraq to the Republic of Kazakhstan Jaber Najma Adbullah Al-Temimi.

The wording "permanent ambassador" indicates Iraq's intention to open its embassy in Turkmenistan.

In October 2024, Turkmenistan and Iraq signed a key agreement on gas supplies.
