The NORAD Tracks Santa program was first launched on 24 December 1955, when the Sears trade network published an advertisement in the newspaper of the city of Colorado Springs, USA, with the phone number of Santa Claus. However, the number was printed with an error, and the children calling their favorite hero of winter fairy tales, actually called the Colorado Springs' Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). Colonel Harry Shoup, who was in the service that night, in order not to upset the children, asked the staff to answer everyone on behalf of Santa. In 1958, CONAD was transformed into NORAD, but the tradition to organize a Christmas grandfather tour is still alive till present.
From the 1955 until 1996, the NORAD Tracks Santa program broadcasted Santa's tour through various media, using hot telephone lines, records, radio and television. Since 1997, the program has appeared in the Internet.
