A briefing organized by the USAID Regional Water and Environment Project (WAVE) and the State Water Committee of Turkmenistan was held in Ashgabat on October 15. The main topic of the meeting was the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus (WEFE Nexus) approach and the important role of media in supporting sustainable water management.

The purpose of the briefing was to raise awareness among journalists and eco-bloggers about the significance of the WEFE Nexus concept and the importance of transboundary cooperation on water resources. Participants discussed how the media can contribute to the environmental agenda, influence behavioral change, and raise awareness of the water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus for the sustainable development of the region.

“The media plays a key role in raising awareness of the Nexus approach, integrated water resources management and efficient water use, shaping public perception of the importance of environmental factors. This contributes to sustainable development in the future,” Ekaterina Strikeleva, USAID Regional Project Manager said.

The briefing also provided a platform for discussing the importance of cooperation between Central Asian countries for effective water management, especially in the context of climate change, according to the organizers’ press release.

Thus, successful implementation of the WEFE Nexus approach requires active participation of the media, which can not only inform society, but also inspire change. Cooperation between the countries of the region and the work of journalists in this direction can become key factors in achieving a sustainable future for Central Asia, where the environment, economy and social well-being will be in harmony.
