The UK, US and EU are set to sign the first international treaty on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), British and international business daily Financial Times reported.

The document will be legally binding.

This is a document of the Council of Europe, which was developed over two years by representatives of more than 50 countries, including Canada, Israel, Japan and Australia. The need for its adoption is driven by a raft of new rules, obligations and agreements being developed by governments to control rapidly evolving AI software. These include the European Artificial Intelligence Act (2024) and the Group of Seven (G7) agreement agreed in October last year.

All signatories will be held accountable for any harmful or discriminatory content in artificial intelligence systems. The document prohibits the appearance of materials that violate equality and the right to privacy.

Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle noted that this step is of particular significance in light of the rapid development of innovation and artificial intelligence. He also added that this is the first in the world that provides for real measures in this area and unites different countries.

Deputy President of the European Commission for European Values and Transparency Vera Jourova said that many international partners are ready to sign the agreement.
