Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan simplify cross-border trucking

The Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan has published amendments to the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of Turkmenistan, which abolish permits for the transportation of goods across borders by road, reports Kazinform agency.
A document published on the Kazakh Open NPA (normative legal acts) website states that the transportation of goods by road between the two states or in transit through their territories will be carried out without permits. The amendments are currently undergoing public hearings, which will conclude on September 5, 2024.
The governments of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan have agreed to these changes, "in an effort to provide favorable conditions for facilitating road transport between the states." After the adoption of the protocol, an additional 30 days will be required for it to enter into force.
On 9 August, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar met with Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Batyr Atdayev and Baymyrat Annamammedov. They discussed the current status and prospects for the development of Kazakh-Turkmen trade and economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in the energy sector.
Both countries are consistently expanding trade and economic cooperation across the entire spectrum of interaction. Thus, over the past 5 years, the volume of bilateral trade between the countries has quadrupled, and in the last year alone, it has grown by 28%. Trade turnover for the first 6 months of this year amounted to $237.2 million.
In November 2023, the first meeting of the Turkmen-Kazakh working group on transport, transit, and logistics was held in Ashgabat, which concluded with the signing of a Memorandum on Transport Interconnectivity.
