Azerbaijan has officially applied to join BRICS. This was reported by the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic, Ayhan Hajizade.

"Azerbaijan has sent an official request to join BRICS," the Report news agency quotes Hajizade as saying. Baku's desire to join BRICS was reflected in the joint declaration on the establishment of strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and China, adopted in early July at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana.

Speaking at the plenary session of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg on July 11, the Chairperson of the Milli Majlis (parliament) of the country Sahiba Gafarova also stated that Azerbaijan wants to become a full member of BRICS.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization created in 2006, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
