The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a video meeting with the head of UNEP


Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov held video talks on Friday, July 16, with the UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Inger Andersen.
The interlocutors discussed a number of key issues related to Turkmenistan's initiatives in the field of environmental protection, in particular, the creation of the UN Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies for Central Asian countries with headquarters in Ashgabat, according to a press release from the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
An exchange of views took place on the practical implementation of the Global Methane Commitment, which Turkmenistan joined during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28). It was noted that work has begun within the framework of a joint project with the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) with the aim of developing a mechanism for regularly providing updated data on emissions detected using the MARS system.

The Caspian topic was touched upon. In particular, there were considered ways of expanding cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNEP in developing the Caspian Environmental Initiative, the proposal for the creation of which was made by the President of Turkmenistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
Inger Andersen thanked the Turkmen side for the invitation to participate in the Regional Conference on Food Security in the Context of Climate Change, scheduled to be held by Turkmenistan in November together with international organizations.
