On September 16, a working meeting was held in Ashgabat, timed to the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, and organized by the UN staff. The purpose of the event is to disseminate environmental information and raise awareness of the ozone layer protection. The seminar was also dedicated to providing possible solutions and recommendations in the fulfillment of national obligations under the Montreal Protocol to phase out ozone-depleting substances in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, and share knowledge on the promotion of new technologies in Turkmenistan. A scientific and educational film on the problems of preserving the ozone layer, prepared by the UNEP OzonAction Office, was shown at the seminar, where all the importance of the problem of preserving the ozone layer was shown in detail. Research by chemists and physicists since the discovery of the ozone hole over Antarctica has shown that the overuse of long-lived halogen-containing compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) may be the cause. Scientific evidence of the depletion of the ozone layer has led to the creation of a mechanism for cooperation in its protection. As a result, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer was adopted, which became the basis for the Montreal Protocol. The event was attended by representatives of one of the leading climatic equipment selling and maintaining companies in Turkmenistan - the private service company Salkyn Otag. Information on the list of all air conditioning systems on sale can be easily found on the company’s website . The seminar also covered the topics related to global warming, the protective role of stratospheric ozone and examples of how the Montreal Protocol protects human health. As is known, 99 percent of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) have already been withdrawn from circulation in Turkmenistan. To date, the only ODS in Turkmenistan is R22 Freon, the limited use of which is regulated. Turkmenistan fulfills all international obligations under the Montreal Protocol. After the adoption of the Vienna Convention, all its regulatory provisions were included in the Law of Turkmenistan on the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The main goal of all these measures is to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbons with a complete cessation of their consumption by 2040. Information was provided during the meeting on specialized online courses “Ashrае” - a modern online method of increasing the level of potential as part of developing information flows. The courses are free and cover dozens of applied areas in the field of environmental protection alone. A review of energy efficiency and environmental safety of low temperature equipment was also conducted, taking into account the areas of application thereof, in order to increase interest in new environmentally friendly and energy efficient principles of getting frost. During the event, a practical lesson was also held on working with the refrigerant identifier device (gas analyzer).
