UNICEF and National Partners Conducted Capacity Strengthening Activities on Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Risk Reduction

From 5-15 June 2024, specialists of local municipalities in charge of emergency preparedness and response; fire safety and construction, pre-school and secondary school education, administrators, teachers and technicians of secondary schools and representatives of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan engaged in capacity strengthening activities with particular focus on emergency preparedness, gender in emergencies and comprehensive school assessment.

The countrywide interventions were organized by UNICEF in Turkmenistan with support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Education and the local hakimliks gathering over 67 participants from Ashgabat city, Ahal, Mary, Lebap, Balkan and Dashoguz regions. The activities were facilitated by the UNICEF National Consultant with support of the UNICEF Specialist on Emergency and DRR.

The training employed interactive approach to create dialogue between diverse partners to ensure that the needs and rights of the children are in the focus in emergency preparedness and response. The training also aimed to foster multi-sectoral, child-sensitive approach to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation which is reflected in the local regional emergency preparedness and DRR interventions. Additionally, the sessions addressed mitigation measures to reduce the risks of gender inequality in emergencies.

The events were hosted and supported by the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan aiming to enhance the preparedness and resilience of communities and institutions in the face of potential disasters, ensuring the protection and well-being of children and other vulnerable groups.
