From June 1, a ban on all types of single-use plastic bags, both plastic and paper, will come into force in Dubai.

“Switch to reusable fabric bags and be part of the change,” Dubai Municipality asked residents and visitors through social platforms.

The ban also applies to biodegradable bags that leave behind microplastics.

However, the ban does not apply to packaging for bread, vegetables, meat, fish and chicken, bin liners and laundry bags, as well as packaging for electronic devices and products purchased online.

Those who continue to use disposable bags will be fined Dh200. The fine will double for each repeat violation.

From January 1, 2025, the use of cocktail sticks, cups and even plastic cotton swabs will be banned. From 1 January 2026, a ban on the sale and use of plastic food containers, tableware, and plastic drink cups and lids will come into force.
