OneWeb, which operates geostationary (GEO) and low-orbit (LEO) communications satellites, plans to provide high-quality communications to Rothera Research Station on Adelaide Island, west of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The company will establish an Internet connection with increased reliability and low latency at speeds of up to 120 Mbit/s. Before this, the connection speed did not exceed 5 Mbit/s. This increase in bandwidth will allow large data files to be transmitted and live interviews to be conducted from one of the most remote locations on Earth.

According to Maurizio Vanotti, vice president of commercial strategy and innovation at OneWeb, this regional trial is a testament to the company's commitment to promoting global connectivity in one of the world's most unconnected regions.

The new remote connectivity system, called TALARIA, includes a ground station in Chile and a user terminal. It took the company 18 months to create this system, from the start of design to completion. It will now be developed by OneWeb in partnership with the European Space Agency, Sunrise Partnership Project, Comtech Telecommunications and Cobham Satcom.
