At the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Qatar on Tuesday, April 2, there was held a meeting with Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Mohamed Hamel.

The Secretary General presented Ambassador of Turkmenistan Myratgeldi Seyitmammedov with a comprehensive overview of the role of the GECF as an international governmental organization promoting dialogue and cooperation among its 20 member countries, international organizations, as well as consumer countries.

Turkmenistan, which has huge reserves of natural gas and is a key exporter of natural gas, could find it beneficial to join the GECF and take part in its activities, the head of the organization expressed the opinion.

The meeting ended on a positive note: both sides expressed their desire to explore opportunities for cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations between Turkmenistan and the GECF, the Forum said in a statement on X.

Full members of the GECF are: Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, UAE and Venezuela.

Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mozambique, Peru and Senegal have observer status.

With the current number of member countries, the GECF occupies a dominant position in global energy markets. Together they represent 69% of global gas reserves, 39% of marketable production and 40% of global gas exports. Moreover, GECF member countries collectively account for more than half of global LNG exports (51%).

The Forum hopes to welcome new members who share the common interests and goals of the GECF Charter.

The organization's headquarters are located in Doha, Qatar.
