Local elections were held in Turkey, Anadolu Agency reports.

For the first time in 20 years, the opposition Republican People's Party of Turkey is ahead of the ruling Justice and Development Party. The mayors of large cities - Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir - retained their posts.

Speaking at the headquarters of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that local elections in the republic were a manifestation of Turkish democracy.

“Regardless of the results, the winner of this election will be, first and foremost, our democracy, the will of our people. The winners of the election marathon were not, first of all, the candidates, but Turkey, all 85 million citizens of the country, regardless of their political affiliation,” Erdogan said, noting that Turkish democracy has once again proven its maturity.

The Turkish leader expressed gratitude to all voters who came to the polling stations.

Emphasizing the importance of the next four years for the country, Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to continue to demonstrate excellence through policies of achievement and service to the people, to continue working to improve the well-being, security and fulfillment of the hopes for the future of everyone in Turkey.
