Kazakhstan is ready to accept an offer to supply electricity from Turkmenistan
Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliev said whether Kazakhstan will purchase electricity from Turkmenistan.
“We will proceed from our needs, from the schedule of our repairs. In general, we are ready to consider the proposals of our Turkmen colleagues for both gas and electricity, depending on the commercial attractiveness for our consumers,” Satkaliev noted at a government briefing, Sputnik reports.
The countries of Central Asia regularly consult on issues of mutual exchange and supply of energy resources, the minister continued. Turkmenistan already exports electricity to Kyrgyzstan, he added.
“It depends on the agreements. Yes, indeed, if the proposal is interesting, in order to protect the interests of Kazakh consumers, we are ready to accept this proposal,” the head of the Ministry of Energy emphasized.
The department will instruct JSC NC KazMunayGas and KEGOC (Kazakhstan Electric Grid Operating Company) to work out this issue, the minister said.
In early March, Turkmenistan expressed its intention to supply natural gas and electricity to Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The country plans to increase gas production from the largest Galkynysh field. National Leader of the Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan plans to deepen cooperation within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States, make it consistent and long-term, paying special attention to energy.
According to Chairman of the Board of KEGOC Nabi Aitzhanov, a shortage of electricity is predicted in Kazakhstan from October 2024 to March 2025. The shortfall could amount to about 1.025 gigawatts, which could be covered by imports from Russia or by limiting consumers in the republic itself.
