Finnish multinational manufacturer of telecommunications equipment for mobile, fixed, broadband and IP networks, Nokia, has found a way to turn the backup batteries of base cell towers into virtual power plants.

The original Virtual Power Plant (VPP) software developed by specialists will help monetize the use of cell tower batteries. The application could provide cellular companies with additional financial and environmental benefits for their business.

Thus, the energy of base station backup batteries to power station equipment is used not only during power outages, but also during consumption peaks. This will reduce the load on the power grid and the cost of energy for companies. The new software is capable of switching equipment from an external network to the battery. Its use will also allow you to automatically sell excess energy stored in the battery into the general network, receiving real money.

The app uses actual electricity consumption data and machine learning to make decisions about returning energy to the grid.

The company says the development will help achieve a real reduction in CO2 emissions.
