On February 20, 2024, the Chairman of the "Turkmendenizderyayollary" agency participated in the 86th session of the Inland Transport Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, which is taking place in Geneva. At the session, together with the heads of the relevant departments of the United States, the Netherlands, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, the Chairman of the Agency spoke on the topic "National visions and political ambitions for the transition to decarbonization of inland transport by 2050", presenting the International Seaport of Turkmenbashi, which was designed and built based on international criteria "Green Port". Representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the International Road Federation (IRF) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) also spoke.

The socio-economic strategy of Turkmenistan for 2022-2052 is designed to ensure sustainable economic growth, optimize the public administration system, improve the living conditions of the people, and, in this regard, it is necessary to continue economic diversification, increase the share of high-tech production in the process of its development, as well as support sectoral digitalization, macroeconomic and financial stability.

In order to carefully preserve the ecology of the Caspian Sea, bio-purification plants, as well as equipment powered by electricity, were installed at each of the terminals of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. The port applies the principle of "minimizing the impact of waste and emissions on the environment."

Reducing and eliminating the negative effects of greenhouse gas and methane emissions into the atmosphere is an integral part of Turkmenistan's environmental strategy.

In order to comply with international requirements, as part of the provision of bunkering services to ships, appropriate work was carried out on Turkmenistan's accession to the "International Convention on Civil Liability for Damage from Bunker Fuel Pollution" (BUNKER 2001), and was recently approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The Convention will enter into force for Turkmenistan on April 23, 2024.

The speakers spoke about the practice and ongoing work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in domestic transport, and also reported that 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions relate to the transport sector.

It is worth noting that our country is actively implementing and using modern environmental, clean and resource-saving technologies, especially in the fields of energy, industry and transport. For example, in 2023, the International Seaport of Turkmenbashi was awarded the ISO 14001 certificate, the "Environmental Management System" and the international certificate "EcoPorts".

The event will last until February 23rd. The Chairman of the Agency will also speak at parallel events on the topics of sustainable transport and digitalization.
