“MIR” TV channel released a video about climate change in Central Asia
“MIR” TV channel and the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia presented the release of the TV project “EcoPractice”, which told about the consequences of climate change in the region.
“The climate is changing here and now” is the main message of the 25-minute video that has brought together experts from all five countries of the region. Leading experts from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan tell about the consequences of global warming that countries individually face with, and what they need to undertake to solve them together.
The focus is centered on joint projects and plans, because resources, especially water, are not evenly spread in the region. Glaciers that feed the Central waterways of Central Asia are located in the Pamir and Tien Shan mountains, in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Over the past 70 years, the volume of permafrost has decreased by various estimates from 14% to 30%, and now the melting has accelerated.
During less cold winters, the water given in the warm seasons does not have time to melt. In general, glaciers lose about 1% of their volume per year, which is reflected on the climate map of the entire region: hotter and longer summer months, lack of snow precipitation in winter, too abundant spring floods and a dry irrigation season.
The main cause of melting is global warming and climate change. Specifically, in frequent dust storms in the deserts of Kyzylkum and Karakum, Dashti Kabir and Dashi Lut, Gobi, Sahara, and Takla-Makan. Surrounded by deserts, the glaciers of the Pamir and Tien Shan due to global droughts, land degradation, etc. are now almost constantly exposed to dust and salt attacks, whose particles accelerate their melting.
And the reason for all this is human influence.
“The time of isolation has passed,” emphasize the video characters – experts, researchers, ordinary citizens in the street. Today, the countries of the world are actively cooperating in bilateral and multilateral formats to implement the UN Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development 2018-1028”, so that one of the largest and richest regions of the world remains prosperous and beautiful.
