Georgian Prime Minister resigned

Irakli Garibashvili resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Georgia.
“I would like to inform the public about the decision that we discussed with the team. Today I am leaving the post of prime minister,” Garibashvili said during a special briefing, adding that he accepted the offer to lead the ruling party “Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia”.
“There are a lot of successful leaders in the team, and you need to give others the opportunity. Moreover, now we are faced with new tasks - in the fall we will elect a new parliament, and the Georgian Dream must prepare to convincingly win the elections in order to continue progress towards other, higher goals,” Irakli Garibashvili said.
He noted that he “uncompromisingly defended the interests” of the country and people and is proud of the results of his work as prime minister.
This is already Garibashvili’s second resignation from the post of prime minister. He first headed the Georgian government in 2013, replacing Bidzina Ivanishvili in this post. For the second time, Irakli Garibashvili became prime minister on February 22, 2021.
The new Prime Minister of Georgia will be officially named on February 1. Georgian media are calling Irakli Kobakhidze, now the chairman of the ruling party “Georgian Dream”, a possible successor to Garibashvili.
