The Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the head of the ruling Awami League (People's League) party, Sheikh Hasina, won the parliamentary elections in the country, which were held on Sunday. This is reported by bdnews24 with reference to the national election Commission.

Sheikh Hasina, 76, representing the Gopalganj-3 constituency, won 249,965 votes. Her main rival Atikur Rahman has 6,999 votes.

Candidates from the ruling party are also in the lead at most polling stations in the country.

According to initial estimates, voter turnout in the elections was about 40%. But according to the country's chief election commissioner, Kazi Habibul Awal, this figure may change after the final count.

Sheikh Hasina has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 2009.
