Turkmenistan strengthens dialogue with UN on climate and legal tracks


During a Cabinet meeting on Friday, Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Foreign Ministry Rashid Meredov reported to the President of Turkmenistan on proposals to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations, achieve Sustainable Development Goals for the coming period, and further ensure human rights and freedoms.
In particular, the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan proposed, based on the initiative of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the development of a Global Security Strategy announced from the high rostrum of the United Nations, to create a working group within the UN, which may include representatives of states belonging to the Friends of Neutrality Group.
Another proposal concerned the systemic and integrated achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for the coming years. Considering that the current "Framework Program of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations in the field of sustainable development" is coming to an end in two years, it was proposed to begin systematic work on the preparation of the same program for the period 2026-2030.
This proposal was detailed as follows. First, starting from the new year, national working groups, together with representatives of UN entities, will begin work in this direction, but no later than the first quarter.
Secondly, in order to prepare a Roadmap for solving the tasks identified during the COP-28 summit, a group of specialists on climate change issues should be created as part of the Interdepartmental Commission on Environmental Protection.
And thirdly, to develop a specific Plan for the coming year to counteract the processes of climate change and adaptation to them, based on the results of the Youth Conference (Ashgabat, 2023) and the 18th Youth Conference in the UAE (Dubai, 2023).
In the field of further ensuring the protection of human rights and freedoms, a proposal was made to open The Office of the Ombudsman addresses such areas of activity as the protection of the rights of children, women and entrepreneurs.
During the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Head of State Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov to work on promoting these initiatives in a practical plane.
