Qatar's National Day is celebrated on December 18.
On the occasion of this significant date, the sofa of the Emir of the State of Qatar announced an official two-day holiday, according to the online news blog Doha News. Employees across the state are due to resume their official duties on Tuesday, December 19.
Qatar's National Day marks the unification of the country in 1878. On December 18, 1878, the founder of modern Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, took the throne. He succeeded his father Mohammed bin Thani as ruler of the Qatari Peninsula.
Initially, Qatar was under the influence of the Bahraini Al-Khalifa on the eastern coast of the peninsula. However, the disputes led to uprisings against the Caliphs, which eventually led to the diplomatic intervention of the British and the establishment of the ruling dynasty of Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani. It continues to this day.
In 1916, Qatar became a British protectorate. In 1971, after the British withdrawal from the Persian Gulf, it gained full independence.
