In 2022, 83% of new energy capacity came from alternative sources. Their total capacity increased by 9.6% or 295 gigawatts. Most of this increase came from solar energy (192 gigawatts) and wind energy (75 gigawatts).

Currently, about 40% of the world's electricity needs are covered by renewable sources, but in order to achieve the goal of warming by no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, their capacities should triple by 2030. This information is contained in the first joint report of the WMO and the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Experts noted that one of the main difficulties in the development of alternative energy is the natural variability of the climate (for example, due to phenomena such as El Nino). Because of it, seasonal and interannual fluctuations in wind energy production can reach 15%. To rely on renewable energy sources, you need to learn how to predict climate change more accurately, because electricity consumption will increase — against the background of warming, more and more of it will be required for cooling. The authors of the report named the countries of Africa as one of the most promising regions: now they produce about 2% of the world's alternative energy, but there is great potential for its development due to natural conditions.
