Ombudsmen of Turkic-speaking nations to meet in Turkey
On 14-15 December 2017, the Ombudsmen of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Northern Cyprus will hold the first meeting in Ankara, Turkey. The gathering will be organized at the initiative of the Ombudsman Institute of Turkey. One of the main agenda items will be the discussion on the establishment of the union of ombudsmen of Turkic-speaking countries. "We will share our experience and these countries will tell us about their experience," said Turkey's Chief Ombudsman Şeref Malkoç in an interview with Turkish media, commenting on the purposes of the upcoming meeting. The Law of Turkmenistan "On the Ombudsman" came into force on 1 January this year. It stipulates the scope and powers of the authorized representative for human rights. In March, the parliament elected Ms.Yazdursun Gurbannazarova as the first ombudsman in the country’s history. One of the activities of the Ombudsman is to promote the study and introduction of international standards into national practice and to enhance friendship and understanding among peoples.
