Build a bridge of communication: 5th World Media Summit issues a joint statement in Guangdong

The 5th World Media Summit released a joint statement during its plenary session on Sunday in Guangzhou, southern China's Guangdong province.

The summit brought together more than 450 representatives from nearly 200 institutions, including media outlets, think tanks and international organizations, from more than 100 countries and regions, including Turkmenistan.

Under the overall theme of “Building trust in the world, promoting media development”, participants held wide-ranging and in-depth discussions on four themes, namely: “Building trust: the role of the media in promoting human development and security”, “Embracing change: how the media responds to new technological opportunities and challenges,” “Pioneering Innovation: New Media Markets in the Digital Age,” and “In Search of Growth: Global Media Collaboration for a Better Future,” to explore how the media industry can address global challenges.

In the Joint Statement, noting that the world today is undergoing accelerated changes unseen in a century, with increasing uncertainty and unforeseen factors, participants called on the global media to build a bridge of communication to answer the questions posed by the world, time and history.

The document states that against the backdrop of the rapid development of new technologies, the media must adhere to journalistic ethics and meet professional standards, actively introducing innovations and rationally using new technologies.

We must disseminate truthful, objective, comprehensive and unbiased news to our audiences, counter misinformation and counter rumors and prejudices to maintain credibility and trust in the media, it says.

Participants also called on global media organizations to strengthen cooperation, promote the overall development of the global media industry and promote mutual understanding and communication between countries and peoples with different historical backgrounds, cultural traditions and levels of development to ensure greater stability and bring positive energy to our changing world.
