The UN celebrated World Sustainable Transport Day for the first time.

In his message on the occasion of this date, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that the task of building a prosperous future depends on clean and environmentally friendly transport systems.

"Transport is a global "circulatory system", thanks to which people and goods move from country to country and around the world, jobs are created and prosperity is achieved," the UN chief said.

Transport is also one of the causes of the climate catastrophe. Thus, the transport sector accounts for about a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. 91% of the energy consumed by land, sea and air transport is obtained from fossil sources. Therefore, this sector is difficult to decarbonize.

Nevertheless, Guterres expressed confidence that humanity will be able to overcome dependence on fossil fuels, which adversely affect the environment, and create sustainable transport systems.

"From electric vehicles and solar engines, aviation fuel from renewable sources, large–scale investments in green public transport systems to measures such as emissions pricing and subsidizing low—carbon fuels - thanks to all this, society can embark on a cleaner and more environmentally friendly path of development," the UN Secretary-General concluded.

The World Day of Sustainable Transport was established on the initiative of Turkmenistan. The relevant resolution was adopted at the 70th plenary session of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly. Over 67 countries have co-sponsored this international document.
