A meeting of the Expert Group representing the Caspian countries was held in Baku to study the causes of changes in the level of the Caspian Sea, prepare level scenarios and adaptation measures.

The event, held on November 2-3, was attended by representatives of the ministries of ecology, hydrometeorological services and other relevant institutions of the Caspian countries, representatives of international organizations and international experts, more than 50 specialists in total.

At the meeting, an exchange of views took place on factors affecting the level of the Caspian Sea, problems caused by sea level changes, and ways to overcome the situation.

The meeting participants agreed to prepare a Work Plan in the field of monitoring and assessment of hydrometeorological and other elements and processes affecting the level of the Caspian Sea, joint development of climate and sea level scenarios, as well as the implementation of adaptation measures for the entire basin.

Participants agreed to implement adaptation measures in response to level scenarios in the Caspian Sea, turning the meetings of the Expert Group into a platform for coordinated resolution of issues raised.

Over the past 10 years, there has been an increase in water temperature in the Caspian Sea. The hottest temperature was recorded in the South Caspian Sea in 2021, when the water temperature was 30 degrees. Compared to 2011 data, this is a significant increase. This was announced at a meeting of the expert group by the head of the department for studying the number of fish and forecasting catches of the Service for the Protection of Biological Diversity of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Elchin Mammadov, Azernews reports.

The expert group was created by the decision of the VI Summit of the Heads of State of the Caspian region, held in June 2022 in Ashgabat.
