President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, during a working trip to the Balkan region on Friday, November 3, took part in the laying of the foundation of a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 1,574 megawatts, which will be built in the Turkmenbashi region, the launch of the Mary-Ahal power line and two power units in the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries.

The construction of the power plant was entrusted to the Turkish company Çalik Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. As the head of state noted, today there are 12 power plants operating in the country with a total capacity of 7,000 MW. In the period 2013-2021 alone, eight of them were launched. In addition, thousands of kilometers of overhead power lines of various voltages have been put into operation.

The new combined cycle power plant will operate 4 gas and 2 steam turbines. Over 150 specialists will work here. This facility will become the second power plant in the country of such capacity, which will ensure reliable energy supply to consumers in one of the dynamically industrializing regions - the Balkan velayat. The excess electricity generated here can be sent to a single ring power grid, as well as supplied to neighboring countries.

In Turkmenistan, work is underway to transform the existing energy system into a ring energy network. The first stage towards the implementation of this project is the Ahal-Balkan high-voltage power transmission line, launched in 2021. The second stage is the power transmission line launched today along Mary-Ahal. The Balkan-Dashoguz power transmission line is scheduled to be completed in 2024. Thus, a circular energy network will be formed, the quality of energy supply to domestic consumers will improve, and favorable preconditions will appear for the growth of electricity supplies abroad.

As for the two gas turbine units at the Turkmenbashi Oil Refinery Complex, their capacity is 70 megawatts. Their commissioning makes it possible to increase the production performance of the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries and creates the opportunity to supply surplus electricity generated here to the country’s energy system.

During the launch of new power units and a reconstructed power plant at the Turkmenbashi Oil Refinery Complex, a ceremony was held to present international certificates from the German Fraunhofer Institute of Energy Economics and Energy Systems Technology, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg - for quality, for the best engineering project, for environmentally friendly and sustainable project.
