A research institute for the study of the Caspian Sea will be created in Kazakhstan. The draft of the relevant resolution was prepared by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

"In order to take preventive measures, the head of state instructed to create a state scientific institute in the Mangystau region, which will be engaged in research of the Caspian Sea. The establishment of the institute will allow us to approach the study of the problem comprehensively, solve large–scale tasks," the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov quotes.

The new research institute will have two main directions: the first is environmental. It will concern, among other things, the environmental problems of the Caspian Sea, in particular, the issues of lowering the lake level, cases of mass deaths of seals and fish, and the preservation of their populations. The second direction will be to ensure cooperation with colleagues from other Caspian states.

The Institute will provide objective and independent information on all aspects of the Caspian Sea ecosystem. The data obtained will serve as a basis for the adoption of comprehensive measures by state and local executive bodies. The creation of a scientific organization will also make it possible to fully fulfill international and national obligations to preserve the Caspian Sea.

According to the draft published on the Ministry's website, the authorized capital of the institute will be 100% provided at the expense of the state.

Turkmenistan also has the Caspian Sea Institute, established by presidential decree of August 9, 2019, in order to develop cooperation in the Caspian Sea region, analyze the work carried out in various areas, conduct marine scientific research, prepare international legal and national documents related to the Caspian Sea, as well as review the implementation of international treaties in Turkmenistan on The Caspian Sea and the preparation of profile methodological information.
