Caspian sturgeon will not be allowed for fishing in 2018
The Caspian countries reached an agreement to extend the ban on commercial fishing for Caspian sturgeon for 2018.
This sturgeon ban was taken by Azerbaijani, Iranian, Kazakh, Russian and Turkmen representatives at a meeting of the Commission on Bioresources of the Caspian Sea.
Moreover, an agreement was reached to further consider the possibility of banning commercial sturgeon fishing even for a longer period.
The Commission on Caspian Bioresources was established following the September summit of the heads of coastal countries in 2014 in Astrakhan.
Its competence include determining the volume of fishing for the year and the distribution of national quotas.
The Caspian has always been distinguished by sturgeon abundance. At the beginning of the last century, more than 39 thousand tons of this fish were caught here, and in the late 70s of this century, just over 27 thousand tons. Since 1991, the number of Caspian sturgeon has sharply decreased.
