Germany will help implement a water management program in Central Asia

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) signed an agreement on the implementation of the regional program “Water resources management in Central Asia taking into account climate impacts.”
The program, which involves Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, is part of the regional climate and security initiative “Green Central Asia” of the German federal government. Its goal is to introduce integrated water resources management at the regional level, taking into account climate impacts.
The program will work with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the basin water management organizations “Amu Darya” and “Syr Darya”. Measures will be developed to improve the efficiency of water use in the region, implement pilot projects for water resource management taking into account climate impacts and adapt the Amudarya and Syrdarya river basins to climate change, the press service of the Kazakh department reports.
An operational plan for the implementation of the Program will be developed and a coordination committee will be created, including the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other participants. The German side undertakes to provide experts and provide basic and additional training for local specialists. In addition, GIZ can supply the necessary equipment and provide financial support in the form of grants. The agreement will be valid until February 2027.
“I hope that our joint actions will allow us to achieve our goals and strengthen cooperation between the countries of Central Asia in the issue of water resources management. Effective and proper use of water is one of the main challenges facing our region, so we will solve all the tasks facing us together and with the support of our German partners,” the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov noted.
