Four students win the national Spelling Bee

The national competition for spelling English words within the framework of the Central Asian Spelling Bee Program was held on Saturday, October 21, at the State Library of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan. About 70 students from 20 higher education institutions demonstrated their English language and public speaking skills.

The event was organized by the US Embassy in Ashgabat in cooperation with the Ministries of Education, Foreign Affairs and Culture of Turkmenistan. The competition was held for the second time, the first time it was held in 2022.
This year, the winners of the tournament were two representatives of the Turkmen State University. Magtymguly and one representative each from the International University of Humanities and Development and the Turkmen State Financial Institute.

National round winners are invited to compete in the regional Central Asian Spelling Bee, which will be held in Dushanbe later this year.
Last year, two students from Turkmenistan took first and second places in this competition in Tashkent.

Spelling bees are a uniquely American tradition. As US Ambassador to Turkmenistan Matthew Klimov emphasized in his opening speech: “Thousands of students around the world, including Turkmenistan, participate in SpellingBees! I applaud you for participating: spelling bees are a great way to test your English, gain confidence and improve your public speaking skills.”

The words that determined the winners of the competition were “sergeant,” “eerily,” and “latency.”
