A young researcher from Turkmenistan wins a grant at a climate competition in Rome

Student of the Engineering and Technological University of Turkmenistan named after Oguzkhan Ogulshirin Tacheva took part in the Youth4Climate: Sparking Solutions 2023 competition, which was held in Rome, Italy, October 17–19.
The girl presented her innovative project “Progressive and modern method of using recycled materials in everyday life.”
Ogulshirin won this competition, aimed at engaging young people in climate change issues, and received a grant to continue her research work in Turkmenistan.
The global initiative “Youth4Climate: Powering Action” is implemented jointly by the Italian government and the UN Development Program in Italy.

Last year, Ogulshirin also took part and won 1st place in a student research competition on innovative methods of using recycled materials, which was held on the occasion of World Cities Day. It was organized by the UNDP/GEF/and Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan project “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Development of Green Cities in Ashgabat and Avaza” together with the Ministry of Education of the country with the aim of developing the creative and innovative potential of future ecologists, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, rational consumption and waste minimization.
With the support of her mentors, Ogulshirin developed a simple trial apparatus for a pyrolysis reactor, which made it possible to obtain liquid fuel, flammable gas and building material. To increase the economic benefits of the project, the young researcher decided to improve the system and use the resulting flammable gas as fuel to operate the apparatus, and use the resulting resin as a base for building material.

“I believe that this idea will be effective in minimizing pollution, and that I, as a young woman scientist, can play an important role in finding solutions to climate change,” Ogulshirin says.
