The delegation of Turkmenistan participates in the UNHCR session for refugees in Geneva


The 74th session of the Executive Committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees began its work in Geneva on October 9. The delegation of Turkmenistan, headed by Chairman of the State Migration Service Amanmuhammet Sazakov, also participates in the forum, the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports.
The session considers the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of refugees in the world, reports of the Standing Committee on International Protection and related programs, as well as reports and speeches of the represented delegations.
The head of the Turkmen delegation in his speech noted the importance of close interaction between countries and UN agencies, in particular with UNHCR, to resolve issues related to refugees and asylum seekers, their protection and provision of necessary conditions. Sazakov informed about the policy pursued by Turkmenistan in this area, the programs being implemented and plans drawn up for the near future, including holding a regional conference on the elimination of statelessness in 2024.
The High Commissioner expressed gratitude to the Government of Turkmenistan for the initiative to hold the upcoming conference and the support provided to the UN in general. He also noted that Turkmenistan is the only country in Central Asia that has acceded to all Conventions on refugees and statelessness,
The High Commissioner focused on the activity and initiative of Turkmenistan in the eradication of statelessness, as well as the significant progress achieved in this direction.
The session will continue until October 13.
