A creative meeting of Turkmen and Tatar masters of folk arts and crafts took place on October 18 in Ashgabat as part of the Days of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation. Talented designers and artisans gathered around the round table, creating unique handmade products that skillfully combine ancient folk traditions and modern manufacturing techniques.

The meeting was moderated by Gozel Magtymgulyeva, Head of the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan, and Elvina Yakopova, Deputy Director for the Development of Folk Art of the State Budgetary Institution “Resource Center for the Implementation of Innovations and Preservation of Traditions in the Sphere of Culture” of the Republic of Tatarstan. In their speeches, they noted that the Turkmens and Tatars became famous as peoples who made a huge contribution to the world cultural treasury, thanks to their glorious history, rich cultural heritage, customs and traditions, material and spiritual values.

Each participant in the meeting brought own original works and exclusive products. An impromptu mini-exposition took place in the hall, which became a platform for a lively dialogue between the masters of the two countries. They shared their experience and knowledge, talked about new techniques and methods, and also conducted master classes, demonstrating their skills in practice and revealing their innermost secrets and nuances.

A demonstration lesson by a Tatar master on felting wool and making flower-shaped brooches from this raw material aroused great interest. Turkmen art critic Tajigul Kurbanova shared her “know-how” used in this art form. Her colleague from Tatarstan thanked her for her valuable advice.

– There are many talented people in Turkmenistan - women, men, youth and even pensioners. They are all in love with beauty and create this beauty with their own hands. And it is also in the spirit of the Turkmens to bring their craft to perfection and the “rank” of high art, Tajigul Kurbanova said, talking with an Orient journalist.

– This characteristic feature of the people is reflected in many historical documents, where a special place is occupied by the history of national carpet weaving, jewelry, pottery, felting - the making of traditional Turkmen felt and “keshde” embroidery. In our time, new directions of creativity and technology have emerged - this is a symbiosis of the past and present, and together our heritage in modern cutting, the Turkmen art critic noted.

Craftsmen and handicraftsmen from two countries also held master classes in carpet weaving, making Turkmen embroidery and jewelry in the museum hall. In turn, representatives of a friendly country spoke about the preservation, study and development of folk art crafts in Tatarstan. They paid special attention to the activities of the Tatarstan Resource Center for the Implementation of Innovations and Preservation of Traditions in the Sphere of Culture.

Tatar craftsmen clearly showed and talked about modern interpretations of the traditions of chain embroidery, gold embroidery, wet felting from wool, weaving, national costume and ornament, leather mosaic, jewelry and calligraphy. After all, all these crafts have been traditional artistic crafts of the Tatars for many centuries.

Education workers also took part in the Turkmen-Tatar cultural dialogue - representatives of educational institutions of the two countries - the Kazan College of Folk Arts and Crafts, the Kazan State Institute of Culture and the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan - shared about the training of professional personnel, designers, and applied artists.
