The total volume of cargo transportation by vessels of the merchant marine fleet of Turkmenistan in January-September 2023 increased by 19.9% compared to the corresponding period of 2022 and amounted to 2.29 million tons. This is reported by the Agency of Sea and River Transport of Turkmenistan.

The merchant marine fleet of Turkmenistan consists of 20 vessels. During the reporting period, more than 19 thousand vehicles were transported by Ro-Rax passenger ferries, which amounted to 127.4% compared to the same period in 2022. "The number of vehicles has increased as a result of the provision of preferences and benefits for the sea transportation of goods and port fees," the agency notes.

In addition, 128.2 thousand passengers were transported during the reporting period.

Loading and unloading operations at the Turkmenbashi seaport and five port points for 9 months of 2023 amounted to 5.5 million tons.

Earlier, the Governor of the Astrakhan region, Igor Babushkin, during a meeting with the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, announced the readiness of the region to continue working on the issue of opening a regular shipping line between Astrakhan ports and the port of Turkmenbashi.

Thus, the region will be able to supply a wide range of agricultural products to Turkmenistan, and the presence of a regular shipping line will allow it to reach new volumes of cargo transportation.

Also, in August 2023, 12 thousand tons of wheat were shipped from the Astrakhan region to the port of Turkmenbashi.

At that time, the Agency of Sea and River Transport of Turkmenistan stated that the country was negotiating with Russia on transit transportation of grain from the southern regions of the Russian Federation to the Persian Gulf countries and other regions.
