The German-French TV channel Arte, broadcast throughout Europe and focusing on art and culture, informative programs and high-quality documentaries, on Saturday evening, October 14, showed the film “Treasures in the Desert Sands - the Ancient Heritage of Turkmenistan.”

Today, when Central Asia has again come to the forefront of history, it has attracted the attention of science and the media with greater force.

The film is dedicated to the unique monuments of the Turkmen land, including Margiana, one of the “centers of power” of the ancient world. And although the Margiana kingdom flourished at the same time as the developed civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt, it was forgotten for centuries. Only relatively recently did archaeologists discover palace buildings and magnificent funerary treasures in the middle of the Karakum desert, in the then capital of Gonur Depe...

Breathtaking aerial photographs reveal the size of hidden metropolises in harsh desert surroundings. In nearby Ulug-Depe, an international team of researchers also excavated monumental fortifications. UNESCO declared the settlements of Merv and Kunyaurgench, along with Nisa, World Cultural Heritage Sites.

How did powerful empires arise on the territory of modern Turkmenistan, starting from the Bronze Age? Research by scientists, shows that their population was highly mobile, long-distance contacts reached India, the Urals and the Mediterranean. The Silk Road between China and Europe became the world's most important trade route for thousands of years and turned Turkmen cities into key points in its history.

All this is covered in the film by German documentary filmmakers “Treasures in the Desert Sands - the Ancient Heritage of Turkmenistan,” which, since its premiere in October 2020, has continued its journey across European screens.
